Making Life Great Outdoors
As a registered charity, Adventure Therapy exists to improve the emotional wellbeing of children and adults with unique health conditions, impairments or limitations through free outdoor activities and adventure-led pursuits. Adventure Therapy only work with qualified and experienced activity instructors who believe in their mission and share their values. Climb Devon are proud to be working with Adventure Therapy as an approved activity provider for 2020.
Here at Climb Devon we believe in promoting safety, inclusion and participation in adventurous activities and outdoor learning by people with disabilities and other special educational needs, as well as providing adventurous opportunities for non-english speakers who may be nervous about potential language barriers.
Want to give adventure a go?
The Climb Devon team are proficient in instructing deaf and disabled people in outdoor adventure, as well as coaching people with visual impairment. We are confident and have the skills to enable disabled people to experience and enjoy outdoor adventurous activities including hill-walking and rock climbing. Joining us on an adventure also provides us with an opportunity to test our instructing and coaching skills in new territories and contribute ideas to the wider community of outdoor activity providers to promote good practice.
Our team have attended continued personal and professional development opportunities and training from organisations such as British Blind Sport, UK Coaching and the British Mountaineering Council in subjects such as:
Climbing for All workshops including activities such as climbing environments, side supported climbing, vertical hoists and wheelchair abseiling
Coaching people with a visual impairment
Keeping deaf and disabled people safe in sport
Safeguarding and protecting children and vulnerable adults
Providing accessible adventure for non-english speakers
When working with non-english speakers, our instructors use Google’s Pixel Buds and Google Translate to translate in near real-time while someone speaks a different language. With the assistance of Google's Pixel Buds, our instructors can easily understand someone who doesn’t speak english as their voice will be translated to english directly in the Instructors' ear, then instructors’ voice is then translated back into the desired language. Currently this allows us to provide our courses in up to 40 languages to individuals and small groups of same language speakers.
*Pixel Buds can only translate one language at a time, currently we cannot provide this service to groups that contain participants with multiple language needs.
